Verizon iPhone untethered jailbreak now available for iOS 4.2.7

Verizon iPhone untether

While GSM-iPhone owners have had the pleasure of an untethered jailbreak for the latest iOS iteration, 4.3.2, Verizon CDMA-iPhone owners haven't been so lucky -- until now.

Sn0wbreeze 2.6.1, a Windows-only utility brought to you by the folks from iH8sn0w, is now able to install an untethered jailbreak for the Verizon iPhone running iOS 4.2.7. But what about all those Mac-owning Verizon iPhone users who want in on the untethered action?

No problem -- simply jailbreak with redsn0w as per normal, then head to Cydia and install the Verizon Untether for 4.2.7 from the http://cydia.pushfix.info repo. Quick, simple and now without the need to connect to your computer to reboot.

Apple seeds new dev builds of Mac OS X Lion, Xcode 4.1

Apple is now seeding two important software updates to developers. The first is a new build of Mac OS X Lion, identified as 11A444d. Although the file measures approximately 1.22GB, the code is not marked under a "Preview 3" header, implying that it is instead a third build of Preview 2. No details of changes or additions have been listed by Apple....

Box.net SimpleShare Mac app for free screencast and screenshot sharing

Cloud storage provider Box.net has announced a new free Mac app called SimpleShare to make sharing screenshots and screencasts with others a piece of cake.

When installed and used with a free (5 GB) or paid Box.net account, SimpleShare appears as yet another menu bar icon. To capture a screencast to demonstrate a feature or bug, selecting "Start Screencast" from that menu brings up a selection tool to drag around the area you want to capture. The capture begins immediately and is stopped by clicking a "Stop Recording" button that appears on the screen. Once recording has ceased, the screencast is uploaded to Box.net's servers, and the light blue menu bar icon "fills up" as a progress indicator.

As soon as the file upload is done, a unique address is generated for sharing the screencast or screenshot with friends or co-workers, and that address is copied to the clipboard for pasting. I noticed that every time the screencast was viewed for the first time, I received an email -- that's a nice touch if you want to make sure that your co-workers have viewed the content. To send other files on your Mac, you just drag them up to the menu bar and drop them on the Box.net icon. For screenshots, just using the traditional Command-Shift-3 or Command-Shift-4 shortcuts automatically sends the full screen or selection to your SimpleShare folder.

I wasn't happy with the fact that the screencasts are saved in the Adobe Flash Video format, as that makes it impossible to view the videos on iOS devices. But this is a 1.0 app, and hopefully Box.net will migrate to a more compatible screencast format in the future.

While cloud storage services like Box.net are not unique -- I tend to use Dropbox for most of my cloud work -- SimpleShare is useful for collaborating with others thanks to its drop-dead ease of use. For me, it's a keeper.

Opening new Terminal window from Finder

I use the Terminal and Midnight Commander quite often. However, opening a new terminal window and then changing to the directory location where I need to use the command line takes time. The Toolbar Dragpoints hint brought me to an idea to create a short AppleScript that opens a new terminal window in the folder active in Finder:
on ApplicationIsRunning(appName) tell application "System Events" to set appNameIsRunning to exists (processes where name is appName) return appNameIsRunning end ApplicationIsRunning tell application "Finder" try set winLoc to target of the front window as text on error set winLoc to home as text end try set pth to quoted form of POSIX path of winLoc end tell if ApplicationIsRunning ...

Another way to remove PDF passwords

My insurance company requires me to fill in claim forms in a .pdf form, but won't let me save it once it's filled in (it is password protected). After using virtual printers, utilities, etc. I have found an easier way to bypass the password and save the .pdf (and thus the drudgery of filling in the same info every time I make a claim). Just mail it!

When Preview doesn't allow you to save a file, nor 'Save as PDF' (nor open in Preview) from the print dialog, you can still use 'Mail Selected PDF Document' from the File menu.

Mail will then open a new message with the unprotected document as an attachment. The unprotected document is buried deep inside the private/var folder but can simply be opened in Preview by clicking on it in the mail message and then saved (unprotected) wherever you like.

[crarko adds: I haven't tested this one. This strikes me as a bug.]
